Biography

Dr Volkan Acun is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Environmental Acoustics at the University of Salford, specialising in psychoacoustics, soundscape research and human responses to noise in the built environment.

His research combines controlled listening experiments, field measurements, digital signal processing, statistical analysis and machine learning to investigate how acoustic characteristics and contextual factors influence human perception and experience of sound.

His current work focuses on the acoustic impacts of low-carbon building technologies, particularly air-source heat pumps, and the assessment and mitigation of noise from building services. He is involved in international collaborative research through the IEA Heat Pumping Technologies Annex 63 consortium and is part of the RAMMIC projects acoustics team, working with academic and industry partners to investigate the acoustic performance of innovative retrofit technologies.

He holds a PhD in Interior Architecture and Environmental Design from Bilkent University, where his research explored the application of deep learning to predict emotional responses to acoustic environments.

His broader research interests include perceptual modelling, data-driven acoustic assessment and integrating human-centred approaches into the acoustic design and evaluation of sustainable built environments.
